One Last Book Workshop

How to Write a Memoir That Matters

If you’re reading this page, it means you’ve been personally invited (usually by Tucker Max or Philip McKernan) to attend a beta version of the One Last Book Memoir Workshop.

This is to help you understand what the workshop’s about, what you get, the reasons to come (and not come), and when and where they are.

What is a One Last Book Workshop?

One Last Book is a different approach to writing a memoir.

Most memoir workshops walk you through a couple basic frameworks, teach some writing tricks, talk about how to sell your book to a publisher, and then leave you to figure out the rest.

“The rest” is the hardest part. “The rest” is where you engage with your past and make meaning from your story. This is where the gold lies.

This program is designed for that: to help you uncover your truth, then write it in a book.

In this workshop we guide you through the whole process:

First, uncovering your truth.

Then, speaking your truth.

Then, writing your truth.

It can feel like therapy, because in some ways it is. This process often brings up emotions you maybe haven’t felt in years, or have pushed away–anger, sadness, grief, shame, and many others.

In many cases, the thing you least want to feel, the thing you have run from the longest, is what will come up the strongest.

But if you understand this, and you show up ready and willing to do the work, it can be incredibly rewarding.

This is what one of the participants of the very first workshop said about it:

“This was my space to finally tell my story without fear of what others think. To not filter my story through the lens of how other people may feel about it or how they may react. To not worry about making myself look like a hero, like someone who has it all together. To let go of the perfectionism that’s driven me my entire life and finally tell myself the whole truth, even the hard parts I don’t want to tell.”

If you’re willing to do that, then this workshop might be for you.

Do I Have to Publish My Memoir?

No you do not.

Important Fact: This workshop is about writing your truth. It is NOT (necessarily) about publishing your truth.

One of the first things we tell you in the workshop is to NOT make the decision to publish your memoir until AFTER you’re done writing it.

The decision to publish your memoir is very complicated, and should not be taken lightly. If you put that pressure on yourself before you’ve uncovered and written your truth, you’re likely to hold things back, and not go as deep into your truth as you could–which is the whole point of One Last Book.

The tagline of the workshop is “how to write a memoir that matters” not “how to publish a memoir that matters.”

We will talk about publishing, and you’ll leave understanding all of the possible next steps, which are one of these four options:

Option 1: Write your memoir for yourself, and decide to never print it or show it to anyone else.

Option 2: Write your memoir, and have less than 10 copies printed, for your closest family only.

Option 3: Write your memoir, and print 50 copies for extended family and friends.

Option 4: Go all out, fully publish it and release to the world.

Some people will decide not to publish, and will get just as much out of this workshop and process as someone who does.

The growth and healing can be just in the writing (though we believe for many people, showing your memoir to at least a few people is important as well, and we’ll explain why in the workshop).

Who Should Come?

This workshop  is designed for a specific type of person, looking to accomplish a specific goal:

To uncover, speak, then write your truth.

This workshop might be for you if:

  • You are ready to uncover your truth.
  • You are ready to be honest with yourself about what you think, feel, and have experienced.
  • You want to revisit parts of your past–especially the hardest parts–so you can write a new future for yourself.
  • You have done some therapeutic and emotional work, and are ready for an entirely new level of personal understanding, depth, and growth.
  • You’re willing to commit to doing the hard emotional work necessary to do all of this.
  • You’re willing to commit to writing your memoir.

Who Should Not Come?

This workshop is not for everyone. In fact, you should probably not come if:

  • You aren’t willing to feel hard emotions.
  • You aren’t comfortable questioning stories about your past.
  • You don’t want to write your whole truth.
  • You want to write a conventional autobiography that is mainly bragging and justifying.
  • You’re not interested in deep and honest introspection and self-reflection.
  • You haven’t done much of feeling your emotions–this is not the place to start. This is the place to go deeper when you are ready.
  • You’re not willing to be vulnerable with your One Last Book group, or create space for them to be vulnerable with you.
  • You aren’t willing to commit to make the time to write your One Last Book (note you do NOT have to commit to publishing it, that is not a requirement).
